Governor to crack down on double dippers

The state is cracking down on New Yorkers exploiting two programs aimed at housing cost relief.

Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced an effort to expose “double dippers” who live in rent-regulated apartments while also claiming a School Tax Relief, or STAR exemption on a different home. A cross-check of rent regulation and the New STAR registry turned up more than 150 names.

State Taxation and Finance Commissioner Thomas Mattox says it is common sense – if you lease a rent-regulated apartment, you cannot have another home as your primary residence.
