A retired New York City police officer is pleading guilty to a hit-and-run accident that killed a 13-year-old girl with Down’s syndrome.

Michael Elardo originally told prosecutors that he believed he hit a construction barrier in June.  Bryanna Soplin had apparently wandered out of her Levittown home shortly after midnight on June 15th and was crossing Sunrise Highway in an attempt to get to her grandfather’s house.  Elardo apologized to the girl’s mother and grandmother.

The judge said he would sentence Elardo to one-and-a-third to four years in prison.
