Young folks moving off Long Island

An overwhelming majority of young adult Long Islanders can see themselves leaving the region if they do not have housing options at an “attainable” cost and cannot find jobs in line with their skills and salary expectations, says a survey released Monday.
This does not bode well for the region, said the report’s author, Martin R. Cantor, chief economist for Destination LI, a nonprofit smart-growth group based in Plainview that advocates for creating centers that support and generate economic development.
Residents in the so-called “Millennial” group, ages 20-34, “are not happy with their overall life on Long Island,” citing as obstacles “the lack of housing options and high housing costs” as well as a dearth of housing “in walkable communities with public transportation,” the report says.
The survey, conducted on various social media web forums between Feb. 27 and March 24, drew 413 respondents.

The truck driver charged in the crash that injured comedian Tracy Morgan had not slept in 24 hours, that’s according to a criminal complaint.

Thirty-five year old Kevin Roper will have an initial court appearance on Wednesday.  The Jonesboro, Georgia resident has been charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.

Officials say Roper’s truck smashed into the limo bus early Saturday in Cranbury Township.  Morgan remains hospitalized in critical condition.  His mentor and fellow comedian, James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, was killed in the crash.

A trial is underway for the Queens man charged with killing a Long Island police officer and another man.

Thirty-four-year-old Darrell Fuller allegedly fatally shot 29-year-old Officer Arthur Lopez during an October 2012 traffic stop near the Queens Nassau border, just a short time after he’d fled the scene of a car accident. Fuller then went on to allegedly shoot and kill 58-year-old Raymond Facey in order to steal the man’s car.

Opening statements got underway yesterday after a motion for Fuller’s trial to be moved out of Nassau County was denied.

Lord Stanley’s cup will be at Madison Square Garden Wednesday.  But that’s bad news for the Blueshirts…

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers in Game Three of the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final at Madison Square Garden.  The three-nothing win brings the Kings just one win away from the title.  The loss leaves the Rangers on the brink of elimination. The team has not won the Stanley Cup in twenty years.

The Kings meanwhile are on their way to winning their second Cup in three years.  They’ll go in for the kill Wednesday at MSG.

Another Ponzi scheme

A Long Island man is facing charges for allegedly running a 17-million-dollar Ponzi scheme.

James Peister is charged in a five count indictment that includes charges of securities, wire and mail fraud.  U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch says he’s accused of bilking at least 74 investors for nearly a decade in connection with an investment fund that he managed.  She says the Suffolk County resident assured investors that their money was safely being invested through phony statements.

The 62-year-old instead would allegedly use the funds to pay out other victims and buy expensive property in St. James and a Hummer luxury vehicle.
