(WASHINGTON) — One of the world’s most powerful drug traffickers has been captured and is in Mexican custody.
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured alive at a hotel in Mazatlán, Mexico, a senior United States law enforcement official confirmed. U.S. law enforcement was also reportedly involved in the operation.
Guzman was wanted in Mexico and at least 6 U.S. districts.
As leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Guzman has been on the Forbes list of the world’s richest people. “El Chapo,” as he’s known in Mexico, is said to be responsible for a quarter of all illegal drugs entering the U.S. from Mexico.
The Sinaloa cartel also controls the border region and is known for carrying out a reign of intimidation and fear.
