Long Island is dealing with an increase in the number of homeless school children.

“Newsday” reports that although Long Island’s economy is recovering, the number of homeless school kids in Nassau County has quadrupled since the start of the recession and the number of homeless school children in Suffolk County has more than doubled. In spite of the trend, federal funding for homeless kids and their families has been slashed.

Nassau County had more than three-thousand homeless students last year, up from just over 650 in 2007-2008. There were almost five-thousand homeless students in Suffolk County last year, up from just under two-thousand in 2007-2008.
