Suffolk SPCA officials say they’ve arrested the woman who allegedly threw a dog from her car at a Mastic gas station and drove off.
Josephine Rivera, of Mastic, is facing a misdemeanor abandonment charge for the June 23 incident on Montauk Highway.
Investigators say Rivera was caught on surveillance camera throwing a small white poodle-type dog out of her car at an Exxon station. According to the SPCA, the video showed the dog as it “frantically ran” to get back in the car as Rivera drove off. Five children were in the car at the time, according to witnesses.

Senft out of State Senate race

Conservative Islip town board member Anthony Senft dropped out of the race for State Senate Monday and GOP leaders say Islip Supervisor Tom Croci, just back from a yearlong Navy reserve stint in Afghanistan, is their first choice to replace him.
Senft filed papers at the Suffolk Board of Elections to withdraw from the 3rd Senate District race, after months of negative publicity over the dumping of 32 tons of toxic debris at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. Senft, though not personally implicated in the scandal, had been the town board’s parks liason on the issue until Croci’s return.
Senft said the park issue has made it “exceedingly difficult” to focus on the key state issues of jobs, taxes and education. “I have stepped out so a new candidate can focus on those issues and the parks issue will no longer be a distraction,” he said, adding he will continue to work to “remediate the park and get it back in shape for all our residents.”

Though Joel spent her later years supporting various charitable endeavors and enjoying an active social life, it was her love of the performing arts and support of her son that ended up helping shape music history.

LIRR strike likely happening

Long Island Rail Road unions and the MTA — deadlocked after contract talks broke down Monday — are preparing for a strike that could begin at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
After less than an hour of negotiations to avert a potential crippling work stoppage, Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Thomas Prendergast said there remained “a gulf” between the two sides’ proposals for a contract governing 5,400 workers at the largest commuter railway in North America.
The unions’ proposal amounted to just a 0.15 percent change from its previous stance, Prendergast said, disclosing details of the counteroffer for the first time.
